How to Style Art Above Your Bed: A Designer's Guide

Your bed is the focal point of your bedroom, which means whatever hangs above it carries a lot of visual weight. Done right, art above a bed feels intentional, layered, and personal. Done wrong, it looks like an afterthought. Here's how to get it right every time.

Size matters more than anything else

The most common mistake is going too small. A single tiny frame floating above a king bed looks lost. As a general rule, your art or art arrangement should span roughly two-thirds to four fifths the width of your headboard. If your headboard is 60 inches wide, aim for art that fills about 40 to 48 inches of that space.

When ceiling height is limited, a panoramic format is an elegant solution. Its horizontal orientation and narrow size maximizes visual impact without demanding vertical space.

How high should it hang?

The sweet spot is 6 to 8 inches above the top of your headboard. Any higher and it disconnects from the bed entirely. Any lower and it looks crowded and risks getting bumped. If you don't have a headboard, treat your pillows as the baseline and measure up from there.

Framed vs. unframed

Framed art feels more structured and finished. Unframed canvas or paper can feel relaxed, organic, and lighter. Either works, but be consistent within your arrangement. Mixing framed and unframed pieces in the same room can look unintentional.

Color and mood

Your art doesn't need to match your bedding, but it should belong in the same conversation. Pull one or two tones from your existing palette and let those guide your choices. Cooler, muted tones create a restful atmosphere. Warmer, bolder pieces add energy and depth.

The Giri Designs approach

At Giri Designs, we believe art above a bed should feel like the room took a breath, not like decoration was checked off a list. Whether you're building a serene sanctuary or a bold, expressive space, the right piece anchors everything around it.
