How to Choose the Right Frame Color for Your Art Print

How to Choose the Right Frame Color for Your Art Print

You found the perfect print. Now comes the question that stumps almost everyone: what color frame do you choose?

It sounds like a small decision, but the wrong frame can flatten a beautiful piece of art, while the right one makes everything in the room click into place. The good news is there's no single correct answer. There are four simple approaches, and any one of them can lead you to a frame you'll love.

1. Match Your Existing Frames

If you already have frames on your walls, the easiest and most foolproof approach is to match them. Consistency in frame color creates a collected, intentional look throughout a space, even when the artwork inside those frames is completely different in style or subject.

This is especially helpful in open-concept spaces or rooms where multiple walls are visible at once. A mix of mismatched frame colors can feel scattered, while a unified frame color creates a quiet sense of order that lets the art take center stage.

If you have mostly black frames, add another black frame. If your home leans toward natural wood, stay in that family. You don't need to match exactly, just stay close enough that the frames feel like they belong together.

2. Match Your Decor Accents

Another reliable approach is to pull from what's already in the room. Look at your light fixtures, cabinet hardware, furniture legs, throw pillow trim, or decorative objects. Those accent finishes tell you a lot about what your space is already doing.

A room with brushed brass fixtures and warm wood tones is going to feel most cohesive with a warm gold or natural wood frame. A space with matte black hardware and cool gray tones will feel more at home with a black or silver frame.

This approach works especially well when you're buying a print for a specific room and want it to feel like it belongs there from day one.

3. Match the Artwork

When in doubt, look at the art itself. Most prints have a dominant tone or color family that points you toward a frame.

A few guidelines that hold up well:

  • Warm-toned art (earthy greens, ochres, terracottas, warm neutrals) tends to look beautiful in wood-toned or warm gold frames.
  • Cool-toned art (blues, grays, soft whites) pairs well with black, white, or silver frames.
  • High-contrast or bold art benefits from a neutral frame (black or white) that doesn't compete.
  • Soft, muted art like nature-inspired landscapes often looks best in wood-toned frames or a simple white frame that keeps the mood calm and uncluttered.

If you can't identify a dominant tone, black and white frames are almost universally safe. They let the art do the talking without adding another visual element to manage.

4. Go With Personal Preference

Here's the truth that most framing guides leave out: there are no rules that override what you actually love.

If you're drawn to a warm wood frame even though your walls are cool gray, try it. If you want to mix black and white frames on the same gallery wall, do it. If a bold frame color speaks to you, that might be exactly the personality your space needs.

Art is personal. Framing should be too. The most important thing is that when you walk into the room, the whole picture, the print, the frame, the space around it, feels like yours.

Your Frame Options at Giri Designs

To make it easy, here's a quick breakdown of what's available depending on which print type you choose.

Canvas prints come in: silver, oak, natural, white, black, and gold.

Fine art paper prints come in: espresso, natural, white, gold, and black.

A few quick pointers on each:

  • Black is timeless and works in almost any interior. It adds definition and draws the eye straight to the art.
  • White is clean and fresh, ideal for lighter spaces, gallery-style walls, and soft or muted artwork.
  • Natural adds warmth and an organic quality that works especially well with nature-inspired art and earthy palettes.
  • Oak (canvas only) sits between natural and espresso, a medium wood tone that feels warm and grounded..
  • Espresso (fine art paper only) is a rich, dark wood finish that brings warmth and a grounded, sophisticated feel.
  • Gold adds a touch of elegance, pairing beautifully with warm-toned art and rooms with brass or warm metal accents.
  • Silver (canvas only) is sleek and modern, a great fit for cooler color palettes and contemporary spaces.

Any of these will serve you well and stay relevant no matter how your decor evolves.
